Discussing the suffering that all endure here and that Christ shared with us, as well as the hope we can have of Resurrection, this is the fourteenth in a series of lectures on the Catholic Catechism recorded in 1965 by Archbishop Fulton J Sheen in the privacy of his own study. A master communicator, Fulton Sheen recorded this insightful overview of the teaching of the Holy Catholic Church.
Eden and Gethsemane are two gardens around which the fate of humanity revolve. Our Lord suffered mentally in the Garden of Gethsemane. His human nature recoiled from death as a penalty for sin. He took upon Himself the sins of the world as if He were guilty. He did this in obedience to the Father’s Will. By taking the world’s guilt upon Himself, He paid the debt in our name so we might have access to the Father. We accept the fact of the Resurrection because of the testimony of the Apostles, who had seen the risen Christ and were sent out to preach the gospel to all nations.
