Discussing the Ascension of Christ into Heaven, this is the fifteenth in a series of lectures on the Catholic Catechism recorded in 1965 by Archbishop Fulton J Sheen in the privacy of his own study. A master communicator, Fulton Sheen recorded this insightful overview of the teaching of the Holy Catholic Church.
Our Lord’s Ascension was not a form of space travel. When He ascended, He was exalted. His being seated at the right hand of God means that He had finished the work He was given to do on the Cross, and is now sharing God’s power and glory. The Ascension means that there is a human nature like ours in heaven. Human nature was not taken just to atone for our sins but also to show that we will have our bodies glorified. The goal of all humanity is reached in the Ascension. Christ also took a human nature so that He might be able to sympathize with our weaknesses.
