Discussing the the role of the Holy Spirit in the lives of the faithful, this is the sixteenth in a series of lectures on the Catholic Catechism recorded in 1965 by Archbishop Fulton J Sheen in the privacy of his own study. A master communicator, Fulton Sheen recorded this insightful overview of the teaching of the Holy Catholic Church.
Living at the time of Christ would have had advantages, but He said that if He did not go, the Holy Spirit could not come to us. While we have lost Christ’s corporal person, He is no longer localized or external but indwelling. The Apostles did not understand the meaning of Christ’s death until the Holy Spirit came upon them at Pentecost. The Holy Spirit reveals the Son and speaks to us from within, not as a substitute for Christ but to make Him more real to us so we understand Him. To be filled with the Spirit is to be filled with Christ. The Spirit helps us to come to an understanding of sin. Our bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit.
