Unlike other creatures, we can reflect on ourselves. There are many ways that people can avoid their conscience. Hypercriticism is one manifestation of conscience avoidance. The foundations of skepticism, agnosticism, and atheism are in a revolt against conscience. Most mental problems stem from a revolt against the divine law written in our hearts.
