Covering the Four Last Things, this talk on Purgatory is the forty fifth in a series of lectures on the Catholic Catechism recorded in 1965 by Archbishop Fulton J Sheen in the privacy of his own study and first broadcast under the title 'Life is Worth Living'. A master communicator, Fulton Sheen recorded this insightful overview of the teachings of the Holy Catholic Church.
There is a difference between being forgiven for one’s sins and fully atoning for them. Purgatory is a merciful chance to be cleansed of sin by those who die in a state of grace but have not yet atoned for all the punishment due to sins. In Purgatory the love of God tempers the justice of God and the love of man tempers the injustice of man. Justice demands that nothing unclean shall stand before the face of God.
