“I am holier than thou” has become “I am worldlier than thou.” After the Second Vatican Council, the Church went out into the world, and the world came into the Church. The word “world” can have two meanings: the theater of redemption, which is good, and a spirit of organization without God. Which world did Vatican II mean to be concerned with? An adequate distinction was not made, resulting in two extremes: the psychotics and the neurotics. Spirituality has swung between these two extremes.
